Your Hosts,
Gene and Ricky
The warmth and spice of South African hospitality,
I’m Gene, born and raised in South Africa, a country celebrated as the Rainbow Nation for its rich cultural diversity. With twelve official languages and a heritage shaped by indigenous traditions and global influences, my upbringing was a vibrant blend of flavors, customs, and community. My love for food is deeply connected to these roots – think braai vleis (BBQ), bobotie, milk tart, and peppermint crisp tart – each dish carrying the warmth and tradition of home.
The open-hearted friendliness and natural beauty of Canada
At age seven, Ricky’s life took him across the Atlantic to Belgium, where he was immersed in a culture rich in community, family values, and culinary passion. Belgian culture, with its unique blend of Germanic, French, and Dutch influences, deepened his appreciation for fine food, from chocolate and beer to the classic Belgian frites.
Ricky went on to study landscape architecture in Belgium, becoming a qualified landscape architect. His passion for nature and wide-open spaces guided him in his decision to emigrate to South Africa and this is something you’ll experience firsthand in the serene, thoughtfully designed gardens that surround our B & B – spaces cultivated to relax the soul and delight the senses.
